The arts is a broad subdivision of culture, composed of many expressive disciplines. It is a broader term than "art", which as a description of a field usually means only the visual arts (comprising fine art, decorative art, architecture, and crafts). The arts encompasses visual arts, literature, the performing arts, including music, drama, film, dance, related media, and by some definitions, other areas such as fashion. A more complete list is given below. There are many more disciplines that are not listed above. What is listed above are the major arts.

What is the definition of an arts and crafts cottage or home?
Q. Does anyone know the true meaning of "arts and crafts cottage/home?" I know what the arts and crafts movement was but I keep seeing new and old houses with this description and it does not seem to be the same as the movement. Thanks for your answers!!

A. An arts-and-crafts home is one that was built during the architectural era of the same name. A new house, therefore, cannot be genuine arts-and-crafts, but it can be in the arts-and-crafts style. The distinguishing characteristic is the "eyebrow" style porch. remember the house in "Roseanne" with the low-roofed open porch? Like that.

What kind of martial arts school should I go to for film and stunt work?
Q. I've done martials arts for 8 years. 4 Karate and 4 Tae kwon do. I think I'm pretty good but average schools don't exactly teach you how to do all the crazy high flying stuff in films. Now I know nowadays computer effects play a big role but I know you still have to have some talent if you only want to just do stunts or be a fight coordinator. How can I get that type of training?

A. Gymnastics is the way to go, if you can kick you can kick. The gymnastics will develop your flexibility and coordination emensly. The most showy art I know of for movie work is probably wushu though. That way you will learn all the weapons stuff too. It got Jet Li a long way. Or an alternative is the Beijing Opera School where Jackie Chan trained, but good luck getting a position there! Also, look for stunt groups in your area, groups like Team Ryoku are are all over the place now. The film industry is strange beast though, it can take a very very long time to get anywhere unless you have a contact or two but best of luck to you :-)

can anyone start a martial arts system? Do you need any special qualifications?
Q. I have martial arts skills, but no qualifications. I want to start a class for women in the UK. Using my not so honourable technique.LOL:) Do I need qualifications?

A. There are already some excellent answers to this question so I'll just ask one? If you wanted to learn to play the piano, would you go to a grade one piano player for your instruction? No? Well, why would you go to an untrained martial artist for your martial arts instruction? It is traditional, when someone sets themself up in a town as a martial arts instructor, for that person to be willing to take on the students of other similar martial arts who might challenge him to "give them a lesson". If you are willing to go through that and believe you are able to come through intact, go ahead!
