audition.. :-[?
Q. I have never done an acting audition before, and the college i go to is putting on a "Boy Gets Girl" production. The audition description says: "Please prepare a contemporary monologue (or a cold script may be given)" I think it says it may be given anyways.. what does any of this mean and does any1 have any suggestions???
Asked by mine - Wed Feb 27 19:44:57 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It means to prepare a monologue from a modern play, or if you don't (which you should) there will be cold readings from the script. (Cold readings are where you just read a part from the script as an audition.) I would strongly suggest preparing a monologue for the audition, it shows that you are willing to work, and is more capable of showing off your skills.

Q. Hi, there. I am an alto and I can hit some pretty low notes. I would like to know some good audition cuts (must be Broadway, 16 bars) for me to sing? I am 14 years old, and the audition is for Seusical the Musical.

A. Check out the book "The First Book of Broadway Solos." It contains selections, broken down by voice type (mezzo-soprano and alto). It should at least help you narrow down your song choice, before you go out and purchase the full score.

Audition for possibly 42nd Street what should I sing at my audition?
Q. Okay I go to a performing arts school and its the second year of it being open and we have this thing were other people from other schools can audition for musicals. Rumor has it that this years show is 42nd Street. Let me remind you 42nd Street is my all time favorite show. So I will be auditioning for dancer/singer since I mainly dance. I cant sing very well so I am looking for a song that is slightly easy to sing. I am a mezzo soprano. So if you could recommend me a song to sing I'd really appreciate it! Also its my senior year so I really would like to get in.

A. It looks like a tough program to get into. Have you even reviewed their website? Here are the audition requirements for Voice: "The applicant must present three songs from the classical art song repertoire in at least two languages, including English. The songs must be performed from memory, with refined tone quality and musical accuracy. They may be chosen from the Italian, German, French, and English art song repertories. Songs with guitar accompaniment, popular songs, or show tunes are not acceptable for auditions. The auditioning faculty is not concerned with the number of years of voice study; rather, they are interested in vocal quality, potential, and musical background including music theory, piano, or some other instrument.… [cont.]

A. That SMELLS like a huge steaming pile of it... Legitimate auditions DON'T reserve a time for you.. especially on e-mail... THEY DON'T really care if you come or not.. especially if it's an open audition. You had better check out that group just to see if they even EXIST or if they are legitimate.. and.. even though I would be dollars to donuts it a SCAM.. you can really be sure if they wan t YOU to pay them MONEY.. legitimate auditions DON'T make you pay.

Any true singers audition for the first time in a musical? Advice?
Q. I am a singer that has performed in several bands, done solo gigs locally, and occasionaly auditioned for singing contests. I was interested in venturing out and trying my luck at auditioning for musical theatre. I consider myself a singer first and foremost but I have noticed when I searched the audition ads that I could possibly fit several parts in plays/musicals that only require minor acting but with a strong singing voice. I can do a little bit of hip-hop dancing and did some minor acting in college (but no formal training). I can relate somewhat to Jennifer Hudson in "Dreamgirls" in which she considers herself a singer and that is where her heart is at BUT she has done a few musicals at a local community theatre in her past. I've… [cont.]

A. Well, first I must commend you for considering "venturing out"! I think all musicians grow exponentially when they expand their horizons. I am assuming by the description you gave in your question that you are an adult singer and looking into musical theatre on the community theatre or semi professional/professional level. I have been directing high school and community theatre musicals over the past 10 years as well as being a choir director for 15- so my background is heavy on the musical theatre side- and here are my thoughts! (these are the same things I tell my students that seek a career in music or musical theatre) When you go to audition of the musical/s you will want to do some research on the individual shows and know which… [cont.]

A. i'm a director and have worked with high school age people. here's what i look for go in prepared. have a song picked out that you know. have your music ready, know the lyrics. if you have to do a monologue know it inside and out. it really shows maturity to come into an audition prepared and directors LOVE to see people who take acting seriously enough to be prepared. be willing to do anything the director asks you to. don't hesitate or make excuses as to why you can't. just give it a shot. be wiling to receive direction. if you read for a part and the director wants to see something different just go for it! as always, have fun, have confidence (don't be cocky) and be you!! i think if you go in as prepared as you can the… [cont.]

"I know there someone somewhere someone Whose sure to find me soon After the rain goes there are rainbows I'll find my rainbow soon soon it won't be just pretend soon a happy ending love can you here me If you're near me Sing your song Sure and strong and soon" It sounds lovely a capella too.

How to fake my way through a dance audition?
Q. I have a musical theatre audition for a musical coming up, and the musical is very strong in dance. The choreographer for this show is really, really good. But I have very little formal dance experience. So my question is: does anyone have any tips for how to fake my way through this dance audition? I've done lots of musicals and musical auditions before, so I know basic terminology. I've also been renting dance videos to help. But does anyone have any other tips? Thanks!
Asked by Annie - Mon Nov 9 10:06:52 2009 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I've taken many years of dance, but I'm not skinny. So going into my last dance audition - I was nervous. Like your situation, the choreographer what AMAZING. The show was Thoroughly Modern Mille. Anyways, there are two things to remember: 1. Keep your head up and make eye-contact with the judges. 2. SMILE! Smile the whole time. No matter what. Just plaster that smile on and go with it. All that being said, that's what I've always done, and it has landed me some great parts. confidence is the biggest key, I promise. Break a leg :-) PS - If it's for a musical, do your best with the dancing and make up for anything you feel you lack by blowing them away with your singing! That's a good trick :)

What Broadway songs should I sing for an audition?
Q. I am a 13 year old girl and I need to sing 16 bars of 2 different songs for a summer camp audition. One needs to be a ballad and one a more up tempo song. I'm thinking about singing "A lot of living to do" from Bye Bye Birdie for my second song. Is that a good choice? And what should I do for my other song? My voice isn't a huge belty voice but I can sing pretty well. I don't know what show I'm auditioning for, it's just a general audition. I'd rather do a song from a more modern show than and older one, but any suggestions are good. Please help!

A. The key is to sing something a 13 year old girl would sing. No one wants to see you tackle opera or rock. There are plenty of good songs for you. "Far From the Home I Love" is an excellent example. "Tomorrow" may seem too immature. Here are a few suggestions: "My Own Little Corner" -Cinderella "One Boy" (also from Bye Bye Birdie) "Much More" -The Fantastiks

A. First I would suggest you read it. Go to the music teacher and ask her if you can audition. If not, ask what you have to do to get an audition. Explain to her that you really want this opportunity and that it is important to you to do it. She or he may be overwhelmed with your eagerness and will applaud your boldness and give you a part on the spot! Or they may give you the same opportunity to try out as they would anyone else. But first you should know something about the story so that you can learn a part. Then I think you should pick someone you would like to play from within the story. At your audition play that part that you like most. If you don't feel comfortable going to the music teacher and asking, you can ask any teacher you… [cont.]

Q. I've been researching audition guidelines for drama schools, and have come across the term audition 'speech.' Is that the same as a monologue? Or, is it more like a personal statement? Any assistance would be much appreciated. Thank you!

A. It's the same thing. Basically you need to entertain them for a moment. Tell them a story. Most can't tell you where any monologue came from and if you said it was written in 2009 best monologue by Joe Smith none would be the wiser.

Somewhere That's Green- Little Shop of Horrors Roxie- Chicago My Junk- Spring Awakening (not actually a solo, but could be sung as one) The Spark of Creation-Children of Eden A few of these are pretty well known, but a couple aren't as widely circulated. I would try for the ones that people haven't heard as much, as when you try to do an overdone song (like songs from Wicked) you get compared to the original artists and the many different covers others have done.
