entertainment (plural entertainments)

  1. An activity designed to give pleasure or relaxation to an audience, no matter whether the audience participates passively as in watching opera or a movie, or actively as in games.
    • 1957, William O. Douglas, Roth v. United States:
The delinquents are generally the adventurous type, who have little use for reading and other non-active entertainment.
  2. a show put on for the enjoyment or amusement of others
  3. (obsolete) maintenance or support
    • 1854?, Charles Dickens, The Seven Poor Travellers:
"This," said the matronly presence, ushering me into a low room on the right, "is where the Travellers sit by the fire, and cook what bits of suppers they buy with their fourpences."

"O! Then they have no Entertainment?" said I. For the inscription over the outer door was still running in my head, and I was mentally repeating, in a kind of tune, "Lodging, entertainment, and fourpence each."

  4. Admission into service; service.
    • 1601-1608, William Shakespeare, All's Well That Ends Well:
He must think us some band of strangers i' the adversary's entertainment.
  5. (obsolete) Payment of soldiers or servants; wages.
    • Sir John Davies
The entertainment of the general upon his first arrival was but six shillings and eight pence.

What is the difference between art and entertainment?
Q. Art and entertainment are both things that are perceived. Good art and good entertainment both produce a satisfying experience for the beholder. What is the difference? Everyone has raised some interesting points but I still haven't found an answer which really explains it. Some of you have characterized art requiring a creative process but so does entertainment. Also some have said art is expression but entertainment can also be expression. Just think of comedians who express their views in often hilarious ways which offer real social commentary just like art might. Entertainment has been associated with enjoyment. If there is no enjoyment, there is no entertainment. However, not all forms of entertainment are enjoyed by… [cont.]

How can I stain my entertainment center a different stain color?
Q. The solid wood entertainment center had been stained a light tan, I would like it to be a dark walnut color. Should I just sand it then stain?
Asked by jennyfurr1985 - Thu Mar 8 11:16:37 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It's going to be alot of work. You wont be able to go lighter, lust darker as the stain has already penetrated the pores of the wood and you'll never get all of the old stain completely out. Start by using some paint stripper. Once the old finish comes loose, use steel wool and a scraper to get it all off. You may need to apply the paint stripper more than once. Then sand down with 220 grit sandpaper. You don't need to go crazy but make sure it;s smooth. Then re-stain and apply polyurethane or lacquer to finish.

A. You could work as the financial planner or adviser for many TV networks, movie stars, etc. As there is more and more competition in the entertainment industry, companies who are involved in it, as well as the people, need financial planners to keep earnings on record, and avoid major losses.
